The WineTots Family had a blast monkeying around the world's first free roaming multi-species primate sanctuary in the Crags, Plettenberg Bay, which opened its forest doors to visitors in 1998.
Monkeyland’s mission is to educate and foster greater understanding of our primate cousins and the threats and challenges they are facing, while providing up close encounters with our forest friends.
Allow about an hour for the guided ‘Monkey Safari’ or walk through the forest during which you’ll be able to spot over 550 primates of various species including Capuchin Monkeys, the stunning Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs from Madagascar, the inquisitive Squirrel Monkeys, Howler Monkeys, and our very own local residents the Vervet Monkeys.
If you are fortunate, you may even be treated with catching a glimpse of one of the Gibbons, amazing apes all the way from Asia, swinging by in a tree.
The Monkey Walk also boasts an incredible 128-metre suspension bridge where you can view the rescued primates from another perspective high above the ancient forest, with protected Yellow-wood and Stinkwood trees towering over the forest canopy.
Monkeyland also offers a casual restaurant, a superb souvenir store full of cuddly wild animal toys (which our kids just cannot resist!) & a viewing deck into the forest.
Wineries are just a swing away
Still have some time? Why not soak up the afternoon sun at one of Plett’s lovely, local wineries, only a few swings away. Bramon, Newstead, Lodestone and Kay & Monty are just a scenic drive away.
Join them for a wine tasting, tapas, platters or pizzas. The Plett Winelands are famous for their delicious Sauvignon Blanc and MCC.
