Updated: Mar 17, 2023

Alto Wine Estate - South Africa's oldest red wine estate, steeped in heritage & tradition, set in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands.

Situated in the "Golden Triangle" high on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, Alto produce an expressive range of superior full-bodied red wines with intense fruit appeal & complexity that reflect their origin.

With a wide selection of tasting options, you'll be spoilt for choice! Starting with the standard Alto Tasting @R50 (sample 4 pre-selected wines) ranging all the way to the Premium Tasting @R120 (6 wines). Enjoy their traditional South African wine & biltong pairing for only R140 – 5 wines with 4 unique biltong flavours & blue cheese paired perfectly to please the palate ; or savour their smoked cheese & wine pairing @R150 (4 wines with 4 cheeses)… the choice is yours. We tried both on our most recent visit - the best of both worlds!

Alto offers 6 impressive red wines - Alto M.P.H.S. (their flagship - an exceptional blend of the best wines from the best harvest), Cabernet Sauvignon (one of our favourites! Full-bodied & fruit-driven), Shiraz (the perfect balance of traditional spice & refined tannins), Alto Rouge (their entry wine - a great everyday wine with excellent value), Estate Blend (Bordeaux style blend of Cab Sauv & Cab Franc), & Fine Old Vintage (rich & warming Shiraz dessert wine) to finish it off!

Feeling snackish? They also offer cheese platters (a delectable selection of 3 cheeses, preserves, olives & seasonal fruit) & charcuterie platters (a meat-lover's dream - 3 cold meats, sun-dried tomato & basil pesto, olives, fruit & biltong). Both platters are accompanied by soft, freshly baked bread.

Guests can get up close and personal with the wine-making process by taking a stroll through the working barrel cellar free of charge at any time... such an insightful experience! This historic gem is a must-visit, and we can guarantee you'll want to return and stock up on their delicious wine!

Is Alto Family-Friendly?

While Alto Wine Estate has nothing specific to attract the tots, they are welcomed to join you - where they can create their own pairing of Grapetizer, biltong & bread! They can also run freely on the grass outside (with a gorgeous view of Table Mountain) or read a book at the fireplace in the cozy lounge.
